What our research says

Anam.ai

This is an infrastructure product, not an avatar video maker: the whole pitch is latency low enough that the face answers while you are still expecting it to. Tool calling and knowledge-base retrieval mean it can actually do things rather than just talk. The cost model is per minute, which is fine for demos and brutal for anything always-on.

Pros

  • Real-time interaction rather than rendered clips, with a published latency figure
  • JavaScript and Python SDKs plus LiveKit and Pipecat integrations
  • Tool calling and knowledge-base retrieval inside the conversation
  • Free tier includes API access and a custom avatar, not just a watermarked demo

Cons

  • Per-minute billing makes sustained usage expensive to forecast
  • The free tier cuts conversations off at three minutes and one concurrent session
  • The pricing page failed to render its monthly base fees, so the full paid cost is not legible
  • No country or registered entity is published anywhere on the site

HeyGen

The strongest avatar fidelity on the market right now, but the credit arithmetic decides whether it is affordable, not the sticker price.

Pros

  • Avatar and lip-sync quality is ahead of most competitors at the price
  • Free plan lets you judge output quality before paying anything
  • Video translation covers a wide language list with synchronised lips
  • Credits roll over for a month rather than expiring at the billing date

Cons

  • Newer avatar models cost roughly seven times the credits of the older ones
  • Free tier is watermarked and capped at three one-minute videos
  • Business tier stacks a $20 per-seat charge on top of a $149 base
  • Custom avatars and the better models are gated behind higher tiers

Which one fits

Choose Anam.ai if you need

  • Developers embedding a talking agent into a product with LiveKit or Pipecat already in the stack
  • Customer-facing kiosks, tutoring and training flows that need a face in real time
  • Teams that need the avatar to call tools and read from a knowledge base mid-conversation

Choose HeyGen if you need

  • Marketing and product teams shipping talking-head video without a studio
  • Localising existing footage into other languages with matched lip movement
  • Creators who want a cloned avatar for repeatable short-form output
