AI Aware vs GPTZero

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. GPTZero publishes a starting price ($8.33); AI Aware does not. Only GPTZero has a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

AI Aware

Most AI detectors do text and stop. AI Aware covers text, image, audio and video from one account, and its output is a calibrated score with paragraph-level attribution rather than a binary label — which is the honest way to present a probabilistic judgement. The pricing is the friction: nothing is published, so evaluating it means talking to sales.

Pros

  • Four detectors — text, image, audio and deepfake video — under one account
  • Ensemble architecture rather than a single model behind each verdict
  • Text results are calibrated confidence scores with paragraph-level visualisation
  • API access for building checks into an existing review workflow

Cons

  • Zero published pricing; no self-serve plan exists
  • Detection accuracy claims are the vendor's own and are not independently verified on the site
  • False positives on human writing remain possible whatever the stated rate
  • Small 2023 startup with a short operating history behind a compliance-grade claim

GPTZero

The most institutionally accepted of the detectors, and the sentence-level highlighting is what makes a result defensible in a conversation with a student — but no detector is evidence, and pricing this one required leaving the vendor's own site.

Pros

  • Sentence-level highlighting shows what drove the score instead of a bare percentage
  • Batch uploads and a developer API make it usable inside an existing review workflow
  • Free tier is generous enough to evaluate properly before paying

Cons

  • Prices are rendered client-side and are not readable without a browser, which makes budgeting awkward
  • API access is a paid add-on rather than part of the standard tier
  • Word-metered quotas punish long documents disproportionately
  • Detection accuracy remains contested and the tool cannot prove authorship

Which one fits

Choose AI Aware if you need

  • Universities and publishers checking submissions across several media types
  • Recruiters and legal teams verifying whether supplied material is synthetic
  • Teams that need per-paragraph attribution, not a single document verdict

Choose GPTZero if you need

  • Schools and universities that need a defensible second opinion, not a verdict
  • Editors screening freelance submissions at volume
  • Teams wanting provenance reporting on documents they commissioned
