What our research says

SciSpace

SciSpace is the broadest of the paper-reading tools: search, explain, compare, extract, review and write all live in one account, which suits a student or early-career researcher who wants one subscription rather than four. The trade-off is depth: Elicit and Consensus are more careful about evidence quality, and the AI writer, paraphraser and humaniser push the product toward producing text rather than understanding it, which is where academic-integrity trouble starts. The free account is enough to judge the explainer; the $12 annual Premium is cheap, but credits run out quickly on heavy chat use.

Pros

  • Index of 270M+ papers with question-based search, explainers, comparison tables and data extraction in one workspace
  • Chrome extension explains PDFs wherever you read them
  • Free account to test the explainer, and Premium at $12 a month on annual billing
  • Agent templates chain search, review and extraction for recurring tasks such as grant or clinical lookups

Cons

  • Premium is credit-metered at 1,200 credits a month, and unlimited use starts at $70 a month annually
  • The AI writer, paraphraser and humaniser sit uneasily with academic-integrity policies
  • The site challenges automated readers and the terms render client-side, so the legal entity is not visible
  • Summaries can smooth over a paper's caveats; the source still has to be read for anything that matters

Wisio

Narrow but well-aimed: it exists for non-native English researchers turning results into a submittable manuscript. If you already pay for a reference manager and a general assistant, the overlap is large enough to skip.

Pros

  • Precision Mode indexes uploaded PDFs so suggestions cite your own sources
  • PubMed and Crossref reference search is built into the editor
  • $12/month annual is cheap next to a grammar tool plus a separate assistant
  • Trial is full-featured for 7 days without a card

Cons

  • No free tier at all, only the trial
  • Month-to-month costs double the annual rate ($24 versus $12)
  • No API and no published company, team or jurisdiction information
  • Homepage banner signals the service was offline for a period

Which one fits

Choose SciSpace if you need

  • Students and early-career researchers who want search, reading help and writing aids in one place
  • Anyone building a first literature review or comparison table across a set of papers
  • Readers outside their field who need dense passages explained in plain language

Choose Wisio if you need

  • Non-native English speakers drafting journal submissions
  • PhD students who want citation lookup inside the draft itself
  • Labs wanting suggestions grounded in their own uploaded PDFs rather than open-web guesses
