What our research says

Reflect

Reflect has turned from a $10-a-month hosted notebook into Reflect Open: MIT-licensed, Markdown files in your own folder, sync through iCloud or Git, and free on the Mac. That makes it a credible Obsidian alternative for Apple users who want backlinks and daily notes without lock-in, but there is still nothing for Windows or Android, and the AI works only with your own API key.

Pros

  • Free on Mac with no subscription
  • MIT-licensed source on GitHub, with notes kept as local Markdown files
  • Backlinks, daily notes, audio memos and Chrome web clipping in one app
  • Notes marked private are excluded from AI access

Cons

  • Apple-only: Mac, iPhone and iPad, with no Windows or Android app
  • The iPhone and iPad app needs a paid subscription priced only on the App Store
  • AI features require bringing and paying for your own provider API key

MySamantha

MySamantha has turned from a $9.99-a-month AI assistant into an all-in-one personal workspace you buy once, with the AI as an optional extra you pay for through your own key or top-ups. That makes it cheap to own and easy to try for free, but the real cost now depends on how much AI you run through it, and the product has changed shape quickly enough that buyers of a lifetime plan are betting on a small team.

Pros

  • Free Lifetime Basic tier covers notes, tasks, journal and one mail and calendar account
  • Lifetime Pro is a single $99 payment rather than a subscription
  • AI can be switched off without losing the workspace
  • Integrations reach Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Linear, GitHub, HubSpot and Notion

Cons

  • AI usage costs extra on top of the plan, via your own key or top-ups
  • The $99 price is labelled a launch price that may rise
  • Lifetime deals depend on a small company staying in business

Choose Reflect if you need

  • Mac users who want backlinked daily notes stored as plain Markdown files
  • People who prefer syncing notes through iCloud Drive or Git over a vendor cloud
  • Existing Reflect Classic subscribers, who get a year of the iPhone and iPad app free

Choose MySamantha if you need

  • Individuals who want notes, tasks, journal, mail and calendar in one place
  • People who already pay for an AI provider and want to reuse that key
  • Users who want a workspace that still works with AI switched off
