What our research says

Brex

Brex is the spend platform to shortlist when a finance team wants cards, reimbursements, bill pay and travel policed by the same rules, and its $0 Essentials tier makes it unusually cheap to start. It suits venture-backed startups and multi-entity companies that will use the policy engine; a two-person business that only wants a card will find the setup heavier than a bank card, and since April 2026 the roadmap belongs to Capital One, which is a reason to watch how the fintech pricing and product cadence hold up.

Pros

  • A $0 per-user tier that already includes cards, bill pay, reimbursements, travel and API access
  • Policy checks, receipt matching and GL coding run automatically, which is where the time saving comes from
  • Business accounts and treasury sit next to spend, so cash and card data are in one place
  • Capital One ownership removes the funding risk that hung over fintech card issuers

Cons

  • Premium features such as multiple expense policies and approval chains cost $12 per user per month on top
  • Now part of a large bank, so future pricing, product focus and data handling follow Capital One's priorities
  • Banking products are offered through partner banks and a broker-dealer, and the fee schedule sits in legal footnotes rather than on the pricing page
  • Travel and card features are strongest for US entities; international coverage depends on entity and card program

Ramp

For a US company that will put spend on the card, Ramp's free tier is the real product: cards, expense capture, bill pay and QuickBooks sync for nothing, paid for by interchange. The AI parts — expense review, auto-locking cards, approval suggestions — sit on Plus at $15 a seat plus a platform fee that the pricing page does not quantify, so get that number before comparing with Brex. Non-US entities and firms that cannot route spend through Ramp cards get far less from it.

Pros

  • Core plan is $0 per user with unlimited cards, bill pay, travel and accounting sync
  • AI expense review and automatic card locking enforce policy before money leaves
  • Business checking at 2% APY and a 30-day trial of Plus
  • iOS and Android apps plus a developer API

Cons

  • Plus carries an unquantified platform fee on top of $15 per user
  • NetSuite and Sage Intacct sync, multi-entity and audit log all require Plus
  • Local-currency cards and Workday or Oracle integrations are Enterprise-only
  • Procurement and accounts-receivable features are paid add-ons

Which one fits

Choose Brex if you need

  • Startups that want cards, expenses and bill pay in one system with no per-seat fee to start
  • Multi-entity companies that need expense policies, approval chains and ERP mappings handled by rules rather than by hand
  • Finance teams that want receipts, GL codes and compliance flags filled in automatically at the point of spend

Choose Ramp if you need

  • US startups and mid-size companies consolidating cards, expenses and bill pay
  • Finance teams that want policy enforcement at the card rather than after the fact
  • Companies on QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite or Sage Intacct wanting automatic coding
